This photo was taken at the same time as DOL441
but facing a different direction - east rather than north.
The image is the cover of the novel, "The Chanonry Encounter",
which is set on the Moray coast.

Leaping dolphin. It was raining so hard when this was taken
that it was dripping off the end of my nose. Worth it though.

Grey seal, Strathlene. The seal was reported as being stranded
or in distress by a number of people because it was
on the beach for most of the morning, but it's common
for adult seals to leave their young on land while they
go out to sea for food. Most times the young animals
aren't hurt or in any danger and are best left where they are
for when the parent seal returns.

These dolphins were seen on 13th June 1999 off Buckie. There were only four in the group, the two adults shown here, a juvenile and a very small dolphin. The small dolphin seemed to be having difficulty swimming and when we got a close look we noticed that it was covered with deep and thick lesions. Its dorsal fin was curled over and it was rolling unsteadily as it tried to move along. The adults seemed to be trying to help it but as we moved away from them we held out very little hope for the survival of what was probably a newly-born dolphin. Three weeks later we saw the group again and with them was the small dolphin, unmistakable by its severe markings but now swimming much more strongly. As far as we know, the dolphin is still alive and healthy today.

A grey and rainy day brought great excitement when this
Humpback Whale appeared in August 2001.
Very rarely seen in the Moray Firth, it stayed off the
village of Portknockie for about an hour before heading
out to sea. It was spotted again a number of times
over the following few weeks at different places
along the Firth.
